8 Bamboo Must-Haves

By Rebecca Jacobs

Maybe you’ve ditched the plastic Tupperware containers and really upped your recycling game lately, but there’s more that all of us could do each day to help reduce our carbon footprint and make this world a little more green.

We’re talking sustainability and why adding more bamboo to your life could be a solution to a very big environmental problem. From swapping plastic straws with bamboo to choosing bamboo toothbrushes and clothes, here are the top eight bamboo must-haves we all could benefit from having.

8 Bamboo Must-Have Items

  1. Bamboo Reusable Bottle: Plastic water bottle use is something that Americans have been cutting back on, but we still have more work to do. It’s estimated that 50 million plastic water bottles wind up in U.S. landfill each year! We have to do better and reduce waste, and we can each do our part by choosing to invest in a reusable water bottle and steering clear of disposable plastic options.

Bamboo is the ideal choice as not only will you help reduce your carbon footprint, but you will also avoid BPA exposure (a known endocrine disruptor.) Plus, many bamboo bottles are also insulated, so they will keep your beverages hot or cold. Bamboo for the win!
  2. Bamboo Viscose Bra: If you’re looking for comfort and sustainability when it comes to the perfect bra, viscose derived from bamboo bras are a must-have. Here at Boody, we offer buttery soft, wire, clasp, and hook-free bras that provide support and comfort for all-day wear. From bamboo bralettes to sports bras, find fabrics that are superbly soft and perfect for those with even the most sensitive skin.
  3. Bamboo Straws: With nearly 500 million straws being used each day, there’s a huge reason to jump on board with the anti-plastic movement and ditch the plastic disposable straws asap. Plastic straws are causing some pretty big environmental issues, especially because they are difficult to recycle, and often wind up floating around the ocean.

Say no to plastic, and carry a chic reusable bamboo straw in your bag to have to sip on that Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf latte or that green smoothie when you’re out and about. If we all did this, think about how many straws we would cut back on per day. It’s about time we all get with the program and say yes to bamboo and no to plastic.Match your bamboo bra with bamboo undies
  4. Bamboo Viscose Undies: To match your perfect bra, we also offer bamboo underwear that take comfort to the next level. Our undies offer a barely-there feel for all-day comfort, and in different styles, so you are sure to find one that’s perfect for you.
  5. Bamboo Bath Towels: Who knew bamboo bath towels could be even softer than the cotton towel you’ve been using all this time? Bamboo bath towels are soft, absorbent, and will hold up amazingly well even with regular washing.

Plus, bamboo makes a more sustainable fabric choice over cotton. So, give your bathroom an upgrade with some bamboo hand and bath towels. You definitely will not regret it.
  6. Bamboo Bath Mat: While you’re upgrading your bath towels, why not get a bamboo bath mat? Bamboo bath mats are an eco-friendly and stylish option that are easy to clean.Woobamboo bamboo wooden toothbrushes
  7. Bamboo Toothbrush: A bamboo toothbrush is the perfect bamboo item to go along with the other two bathroom items you have upgraded to bamboo. Plastic toothbrushes are another big source of waste, but you can again do you part in reducing how much plastic we use each year by switching to bamboo toothbrushes.

Their biodegradable handles make them a much more sustainable option, and you can reduce your exposure to BPA, win, win. Plus, their soft bristle brushes are a welcome addition to your oral health routine, especially if you have sensitive teeth.
  8. Bamboo Viscose Clothing: If you’re looking for clothing that’s comfortable, soft, and cooling, bamboo clothing is the way to go. At Boody, we offer viscose derived from bamboo activewear, leggings, tops, bodysuits, socks, and men’s clothing for all of your style needs. We even offer Boody Baby, which is an affordable luxury line of baby clothing where you can buy all the essentials like baby shirts and onesies for your little loved one.

The Takeaway

Choosing bamboo whenever you can is always a good idea. From the straws you use to the clothes you wear, bamboo is a sustainable, healthy, and stylish choice. Take small steps to live a more eco-friendly life by making the switch to bamboo, one item at a time.

If we all make the switch to bamboo products, imagine how much less waste there would be. Do your part starting today by saying yes to bamboo and no to plastic and environmental waste.

Makeena: The Smart Shopping App

What is Makeena? Makeena is a free and easy-to-use mobile app that helps you discover better-for-you, better-for-the-planet products, then rewards you for your purchases, anywhere you shop.  Makeena is part of a larger movement — a movement to build better businesses.  We believe small choices impact the world big time.  Being B-Certified means we’re socially responsible and committed to being the change we wish to see in the world.  We give back to environmental nonprofits as a member of 1% for the Planet and partner with other conscious companies.  Where did the idea for Makeena come from? I have always been passionate about taking care of our planet.  I grew up across the street from a corn field that was sprayed with pesticides, so from an early age I was very aware of the environmental impacts on what we eat.  As a child I was also very concerned about people who didn’t have access to healthy food and was always looking for ways to help.  Ultimately, when I went vegan in the 1980s I became even more aware of how difficult it can be to find brands that prioritize sustainability and make healthier products.  Ultimately, these experiences motivated me to start Makeena so that everyone on this big, beautiful planet of ours can easily find and afford healthier food and eco-friendly products.  We chose the name Makeena because it means “happiness” in Swahili and “abundance” in Hawiaiian.  From our headquarters in Boulder, Colorado, we like to say Makeena also means empowerment.  It puts the power of shopping for good directly into the hands of mindful consumers  How did you start and launch the app? We’ve been fortunate in that we’ve been selected to participate in a couple of accelerator programs with really smart mentors and advisors who have helped us refine our platform and build out our strategy.  Along the way we’ve been able to stay true to our core purpose and vision -- which is making the world a better place through our technology and community that rewards the discovery and purchase of better-for-you, better-for-the-planet brands and products.  We’re super excited about Makeena and the future!   What have been some of the biggest hurdles? Like most businesses, the last few months have been difficult to navigate.  We were in the middle of setting up a booth at a trade show for one of our industry's largest events when COVID restrictions forced a rapid change in plans.  For us, the ability to be nimble and responsive, while sometimes painful, also teaches lessons in patience and resiliency.  Ultimately, every hurdle you face in business can either be a curse or blessing -- it is all in the mindset you choose. What have been some of your biggest successes? We’re really excited by all 2020 has brought us so far!  We earned our B-Certification in January, and are launching a new website, new functionality in our app, new newsletter, new community, and added some great people to our team.  And the best part is, we still have half a year left to go!  Truly, we believe the best days are ahead for Team Makeena!   What are your best recommendations for someone new to the app? First off, thank you for downloading Makeena!  We are excited to have you in our community. Second, start scrolling through our brand partners on Makeena and “unlock” experiences.  Take the time to check out brands you already know and love, and those you haven’t yet tried!  Be sure you engage with all the brands on social media, opt-in for their newsletters, and add items you want to try to your shopping list.  Best of all, you can shop at your favorite store or online, anytime.  Once you’re done shopping, scan the UPC codes for the Makeena products you’ve purchased, and take a photo of the receipt and upload it through the app.  You’ll then get cash back through your PayPal or Venmo account. Finally, don’t forget to visit the Rebates page.  You might find a fruit, vegetable, or even an organic household product that you haven’t used in a while that you can earn a little cash back on as well. Using the Makeena app is a fun way to explore something new and engage with great products that are truly better for you and better for the environment.  How’s that for a win-win?!?
